Personal Information
Selim is a quiet, fatherly type, and has several 'adopted' siblings amongst the people who attend his masque. He's a giving sort of person. He lives for his masque, for his family, for Allah and for giving zakat, and is quietly involved in quite a few organisations like Amnesty International. Bianca Rheys is like a little sister to him, and he has always been best friend, emotional anchor and brother figure for her. He is one of those people who forms deep emotional attachments to people but never quite manages the sort of love that leads to marriage, and despite the expectations of his culture he is more than happy single.
Backstory
Selim grew up in Cairo. His father was the foreman for the Beauregard Archaeological Association, and when he was ten years old he met Bianca, the daughter of Arthur and Alanna Rheys. The two of them became best friends almost immediately, since their personalities suited and complemented each other, and when the time came for Bianca to go to school in England three years later, the parting was tearful on both sides. She and Selim promised they’d stay in touch always, because they were best friends, and that’s what best friends did.
When Bianca's sister Hannah and Hannah's husband Mark moved back to Cairo, Hannah and Selim became closer friends than either of them had perhaps expected. Selim had been perceptive enough to see that Bianca hated the way she looked because it made Hannah angry at her, and he had been expecting to dislike the older sister, but they got on well, and he eventually decided that childhood prejudices weren't worth keeping. In time Selim became Hannah's confidante, the same way he had been Bianca's when they were younger, and that made the tragedy that occurred when Selim was nearly eighteen that much worse.
Selim's father shot Arthur Rheys, a crime of greed, and Hannah's husband Mark reacted instinctively, pouring himself into hatred of Islam. Hannah couldn't take this and ran, heavily pregnant, telling only Selim where she might be able to be found. He kept her secret until two days before the funeral, when he and Bianca left to try to find her.
They found her in one of the pyramids, as she'd said – but they didn’t expect to find her with advanced contractions. As it turned out, Bianca, Selim and Hannah’s relationships with one another as friends-and-family were firmly solidified when the two teenagers delivered the woman’s infant son, Arthur Selim Rheys-Allen, born only a week after his grandfather’s death.
He was the youngest one at the funeral.
Selim served as the foreman until he turned twenty, at which point he stepped into his role as sheik. When Bianca asked him to perform her marriage to Detective Cary Vaughn-Blair, he did as she requested, despite his disapproval; she'd only known the detective for a month, and Selim thought that Vaughn-Blair was likely to be bad for Bianca. She laughed and told him that he was only jealous. Since he'd never entertained those sort of thoughts about her, Selim stayed long enough to complete the ceremony, and then he and Bianca did not speak until her 24th birthday. The two of them patched things up when she told him she was going to Rhode Island to become a lawyer – alone. He accompanied her to her flight, and then returned to his masque.
The two of them kept in close contact over the years, via letters and phone calls when they were affordable, and email as a more immediate, cheaper way of keeping in touch. Selim kept himself busy with the masque and the various humanitarian organisations he took part in, and despite expectations never married, and likely never will.
