Magruder

A very, very very old Virginian family, the Magruders have been around and well known since the early 1800s, when General John Bankhead Magruder, called "Prince John" by his friends, served in quite a few wars, like the Mexican-American War and then the Civil War. He was a very impressive member of the Confederacy and despite the fact the Confederates lost, lots of things were named for him and by him and given to his family, and he ended up a major general in the Imperial Mexican Army in the 1860s.

Prince John's family descended from Scotland, and his grandson Malcolmb decided to put the original 'c' back in the family's name, turning a few of the Magruders into MacGruders. It didn't hurt the legacy – the locals know.

Fort Magruder was named after him. So was a small town called Magruder in York, Virginia, that no longer exists. It was absorbed into what became Camp Peary, a place that years later, General Magruder's descendant 2nd Lieutenant Kitessa MacGruder (then Sergeant) almost witnessed a murder at. Magruder Boulevard, also named for the family, is still there.

The two large family strongholds in the York County area, 1061 Thomas Jefferson Street and 102 Geiger Road, in the District of Columbia and Quantico respectively, still both hold members of the family. Many others now live in Europe, but most serve in the military at one point and the arts another.
