Detailed Information

Physical Description

Betsy was about 4'11", very petite, with light brown hair that got quite dark as she reached old age (then turned silver). She had rosy cheeks and big brown eyes and freckles on her nose. She followed in the steps of the Gibson Girls as a young woman, then became the epitome of Edwardian style as she became a mother. She was probably first real fashionista in the family, and with good reason. She was very beautiful and very personable and it showed in everything she wore. She was never casually dressed and had a very difficult time adjusting to the fact that women could wear trousers (she never really did).

Personal Information

Betsy was a bubbly woman with a very high, infectious laugh. She had her hands in half a dozen things, and was especially influential on her husband, who used her as his muse when FDC turned to jewelry. She was also close to the best fashion designers of the day, such as Lady Duff Gordon, and later Coco Chanel. She and her husband traveled constantly and she was extremely cultured and spoke quite a few different languages.

She was stubborn, however, and could be strict with her children. Overall, though, she was known for a great sense of humor and a fun personality and was very easy to get along with. Although it would be a lie to say she wasn't elitist. She was.

Backstory

Raised by aristocratic parents with lots of real estate in England and Wales. Was considered quite a beautiful girl and a good catch. Had a bit of a saucy, flirty streak, but was usually demure. Hotly sought after by many aristocratic gents but they were often too wild for her sensibilities. She had a lot of sensibilities. Met and married Sir Frederick Fitzwilliam within the first five years of the twentieth century. Traveled nonstop thereafter, became close to the most rich and powerful families in the world, lived the life of a blue blooded Edwardian. If you were rich and powerful between 1900 and 1960, she knew you and loved you and probably socialized with you on more than one occasion. Began to have a family in 1910. Helped design jewelry for the Fitzwilliam Diamond Company. Had her third and final child in 1916. Husband went off to war. Children went off to school, got married, had families. Moved to Surrey with her husband to allow oldest son to inherit the family estate. Saw grandchildren regularly and took care of oldest daughter-in-law while she was pregnant during WWII. Lived high life all through the rest of her life until her death in 1960.

Backstory: Simplified
