The Kavanaghs are a fairly well-known family in Ireland, for all they tend towards solitude on their estate in Galway. The Kavanaghs have been civil servants as far back as the records go, and at the current point in time contains three attorneys and two doctors.

Lycanthropy was introduced into the Kavanagh family with Elspeth Cartwright in 1946, when her first child, Niall, was born. Elspeth was the heiress to the Cartwright family fortune, which was essentially a huge tract of land in Galway and enough funding to keep it in the family as long as they required it. Being werecats, they probably didn't need quite as much land as they'd bought, but Elspeth could never bring herself to sell it when her parents died, and it has come in very handy in the ensuing years. On the other side of the family, Padraig O'Gevany coincidentally married a were-jaguar years later. Everyone finds it rather amusing.

The Kavanaghs and assorted relatives are all welcome on the estate, which has the main lodge containing a guest wing as well as the main family wing, and several lodges belonging to individual members of the family. There is a fairly large forested area and a meadow between the main lodge and a smaller, private lodge where anyone can go if they need to be alone. It is generally understood by the family that anyone in that lodge is not to be interrupted.

The estate is about an hour's drive away from Athenry, in Galway.
