Backstory
John is the only child of very conservative, Catholic parents. He was bred for Eton from the time of his birth and, shortly thereafter, learned that life was probably best experienced with an open mind and a lot of justice. He never got on well with his parents after starting uni, yet they continually dragged him to social events and galas where a family of their status and money would be expected to be seen.
That's how he ended up meeting Claire, who was merely eighteen at the time. He was attending a gala reception for the 1985-1986 season of the Royal Ballet. Claire Fitzwilliam had recently been promoted to principal and was making the rounds amidst the crowd. His parents insisted he talk to her, as her parents were incredibly wealthy and influential people, and she was a gorgeous girl. They were also concerned that their son was getting too old and that if he didn't find a wife soon, he'd never find one.
John, who was in his last years at Oxford and working at his father's law firm, talked briefly with Claire. Despite the short length of their conversation, she haunted him from that day forth, and a year later he saw her as she began her term at Cambridge. They became friends, then began dating, and after Avery Murdoch's murder in 1987, their relationship intensified rapidly and they were engaged and married in 1988 (neither one wanted to be married in a cathedral, and in fact John didn't even want to wear a tie, but his parents insisted upon it and everyone gave in to their wishes).
He moved back with Claire, whom he was completely dedicated to, to the Fitzwilliam Estate in Cape Town. There he set up his own law firm and became incredibly influential during the tumultuous end of Apartheid.
After their oldest son had trouble at Eton, John realized that perhaps a family and being a parent was not his strongest suit. He loved his wife, loved his children, but his wife's supernatural abilities and her extreme beauty scared him. He never felt good enough for her and his insecurities landed them in a great deal of trouble in 2003 and 2004, culminating in a short separation in early 2005. It seemed that their marriage was on the mend, but John couldn't handle their home life anymore and they divorced in 2006.
He nearly moved back to London permanently, but he missed his family and came back to Cape Town. He sees his children several times a week and remains very good friends with Claire, though he is still very much in love with her.
