Hope In Alms
From DirtyWiki
The Hope In Alms Foundation is the charitable organization founded, funded and fielded by the Fitzwilliam Diamond Company and the family.
It began in 1934, at the insistence of Randolf Fitzwilliam's young wife, Isabella. Until then, he put his money in politics and foundations for the poor, but nothing organized or large-scale. As the family's fortune grew, it seemed somewhat disturbing to be attached to a torn country without helping in any way they could.
The foundation has grown exponentially since then.
Hope In Alms has opened up nine schools across South Africa, each one devoted to top education for underprivileged children. They are all private schools, and room and board is free.
There are, however, two schools that do not board, and were set up in the townships and farmlands to help combat violence and disease. They offer medical care, activities for teens/young adults, and cater to the environment in which they are operating (ie, the school in the farmlands is far more agricultural than the one in the township).
In addition to schools, there are also company-funded orphanages that feed into some of the schools for education and interaction.
The teachers in these academies are all hand-picked by the company, screened for their qualifications, and paid well (housing is also accommodated for out-of-country/province teachers).
All of the schools are integrated, though whether or not the population reflects this is entirely dependent on the location. Students are not screened for anything other than what paying public and private schoolchildren would be screened for. They do not discriminate against students with HIV/AIDS, and provide extra care, with connections to nearby hospitals.
The foundation also donates 10% of FDC's annual $5billion+ income to medical research, prominently HIV/AIDS, cancer, osteogenesis imperfecta and drug rehabilitation, though these are not all. (These monetary donations are often padded by the family's personal donations and involvement.)
Jewelers for Children volunteers often work at these schools for extra care and individual attention to each and every student.
Hope In Alms is currently centered in South Africa, but it may branch out in the future. Where Hope In Alms doesn't reach, JfC does.
