Demonology

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Almost.

History

As stated before, demons came from angels. But instead of being capable of randomly springing up, because the spirits of those departed cannot really last more than a week, let alone feed on someone for a long period of time, the original demons were corruptions of angels and human souls, when the world was still a bit mixed up, but became their own creature within a few centuries.

But the history doesn’t matter; it’s what they can do now.

Demons are the polar opposites of angels, but were unable to access the same powers already bestowed upon the angels by the time of their creation. Thus, they cannot bring people back from the dead, they cannot kill angels, and they cannot go near the afterlife, except in death (and only angels can kill them).

Powers

  • I.) Demons feed off of people’s auras, off of people’s souls. Off of their life force. Without knowing what they are, it’s impossible for a demon to control the feeding, either to feed more or to not feed at all. Therefore, a demon is inherently dangerous. While a demon does not require feeding to survive, once they have a taste, it becomes addictive in the same way a drug does. They crave more and if unable to get more, will spiral into withdrawal. The need is purely superficial.

              a. Upon feeding, a demon does not have the ability to read the emotions or the specific feelings that came with the soul or the energy, as a vampire does. Energy is energy. An imprint of some of the person’s memories may linger for some time after it happens, however. Only significant memories, even ones that are not conscious to the person on whom the demon fed, will appear. Sometimes these memories only show up in dreams. Sometimes, not at all.

              b. Feeding gives demons a high. Consuming all of the energy they can find is not necessary, nor is it the common way to go about feeding. Just a taste of a soul is enough. But that taste is what starts the addiction, and soon the highs become shorter and shorter until they cannot feed on less then ten or more people a day. Sometimes they may drain a victim of all the energy they possess.

              c. The longer a demon feeds, the more likely it becomes that they will send their victim into a coma. Feeding until there is nothing left will not kill their victim. Generally, a slight wooziness is felt by the victim who has been casually fed off of. They will become dizzy and often need to sit down. Passing out will happen if a demon pushes the casual feeding a little too far. A coma will occur if a demon feeds until the victim is empty.

              d. Physical contact with the victim is not necessary in order to feed. Simply standing in the same room as the victim is enough.

              e. The ideal snack is an angel’s soul. They are incredibly pure and stand out among the rest of the human souls, which is why angels are much more easily afflicted by demons. This means that any demon with no control on his or her powers will pose a threat to an angel even if they don’t mean any harm.

  • II.) Demons have increased speed and strength. They’re probably a few times stronger than humans, but you must remember that the younger a demon is, the weaker they will be. And a demon who is more physically fit will be stronger than a demon who is unfit. However, even the laziest of demons will be stronger than the strongest of humans.

              a. They are, arguably, the strongest supernatural species in physical strength and speed only. A demon could take and defeat an angel only if the angel was caught off-guard or too young to understand what’s going on. But a more efficient way to take out an oblivious angel, without risking being killed, is to feed off of them before making their presence known. A demon cannot kill an angel, though. And any wounds inflicted by any magical creature, no matter how severe, can be healed by an angel.

  • III.) Demons can fly, but need their wings to do so.
  • IV.) Demons can also affect the environment around them. This mostly manifests in earth-shattering quakes and loud noises. They don’t have control over the weather, and the shockwaves of their anger echo around where they stand/sit. Being in the same room as an angry or happy demon won’t really feel any different—but if the former is true, get out of the room, anyway.
  • V.) They also have telekinetic powers, as with angels. And also as with angels, these powers are usually pretty weak, limited to opening and shutting things, moving objects around—not buildings. And certainly not uprooting bridges and trees.
  • VI.) While they don’t have the ability to consciously climb into someone else’s dreams or head, as angels do, they are more prone to being seen in visions and premonitions.
  • VII.) They cannot alter their appearances like angels can, but they also have a natural appearance unlike their human appearance.
  • VIII.) Demons are essentially walking lie detectors. While they are not a truth serum equivalent – they cannot tell what the truth in a situation actually is – if they are aware enough of their own abilities they can automatically tell when someone is lying, and it's an almost itching sensation when they're paying attention.

Appearance

  • I.) Wings. They are not nearly as ‘pretty’ as angel wings. They more closely resemble bat wings, as their once-feathery wings were stripped away as they became more and more corrupt (the feathers did not stay in). Some have more feathers than others, but they are dark, tangled and ruffled in ways that seem to indicate their being lost in a hurricane. As such, they can’t fly very efficiently for very long periods of time over very large distances, but they are still fast flyers. Their wings are black and covered in a thin membrane.

              a. Their wings are the same size as angel wings.

  • II.) The glow is almost inverse. It’s a dark glow, like some sort of black light without the cool results.
  • III.) Their eyes turn completely black when angry, from the iris to the whites.

A demon has the heaviest inner battle to fight of any of the supernatural creatures. Since they are a corruption, a perversion of nature, nature doesn’t cooperate with them. As such, they have wicked, wicked tempers that can be sparked off by absolutely nothing. This temper causes them to manifest completely and without warning. There are demons who fight against this every day, and demons who simply give in.

Some also fight to keep from feeding. Some feed religiously. The latter path tends to lead to the complete end of whatever humanity they had left. A taste of their own power will lead a demon to try more, do more, embody the very essence of the corruption they were spawned from.

A demon left to his own devices, or a demon who gives in, will succumb to the fight and be a completely corrupted, unnatural being. They will not respond to emotion beyond anger and hunger. They will not understand the concepts of right and wrong. They will be completely lost and there is nothing anyone can do to help. They are dangerous and unpredictable, like a rabid animal. Completely beyond help.

As far as the genetic pecking order is concerned, demons come in second. Angels will always give birth to angels. Demons who do not mate with angels will always give birth to demons. There are, as always, no hybrids. Angels and demons cannot mix. Demons are more frequent than angels. Many possessions and other tales of bizarre deaths and creatures can be attributed to demons—but not anything that can be exorcized.

Miscellany

  • A demon who is fully aware of what they are is extremely rare, almost rarer than the demon itself. This is because demonic parents are not exactly suited for raising children or even being in a relationship, and often, an explosive confrontation will occur in which any human parent is killed and the other parent leaves her children behind, demon or not. Thus, they are raised with no knowledge or understanding as to their true nature. This happens in more families than not. One could almost make the assertion that no demon remains in a family for long.
  • Being a demon is a test of will. A constant battle of conscience versus instinct. It is impossible to completely rid oneself o the urge to feed, especially if they have ever fed previously. An uneducated demon will not understand what the urge is, and thus their body will feed on its own and soon they will understand how to master it. But a demon who knows and understands and fights against it will have a terrible battle ahead of them. You cannot release the demon. You cannot ever fully subdue it. All you can do is fight and the battle can be exhausting.
  • No demon can go through their life without falling prey to the anger, the manipulation, the hunger that being a demon creates. This will happen at puberty almost automatically and unless it can be controlled, will spiral out out control and any humanlike traits are at risk of being erased completely.
  • A demon that has been reduced to its 'natural' and not human state will not look human anymore. They will lose all functioning conscience and understanding of right and wrong. Many times they will forget their human language and name. There is no way at all to save a demon who has been reduced down to its core. See: Hesther Devise.
  • The ultimate reason that many demons do function in society is that society taught them right from wrong and they attempt, instinctively, to stop these urges that feel wrong. Like a drug user who hasn't yet closed in on the addiction, they can still say no and attempt to go alone. But no demon can live life without angry, violent, destructive outbursts, full on manifestations, or feedings. And, again, since most have no idea that they aren't human at all, they are more easily subjected to losing control.
  • If someone were to attempt an exorcism of a demon, it would essentially work just as the person exorcising intended: it will bring the demon out. Unfortunately, the will not come out of the body it inhabits, but instead will fully manifest and even the best controlled and safe sort of demon will lose control in such a situation. The person doing the exorcism will probably not survive. (These demons will not remain out of control forever, just for this particular timespan.)

Levels of Function

  • High Functioning: Generally they know that they aren't human. They know and they hate this, and as such are able, with a great deal of mental and physical strength, to avoid feeding and to control their outbursts. But they will still have a short temper and will probably be manipulative in various situations. They will never be your bubbly soft, kind, easy-going and open friend. It is simply not a personality that can possibly work. They will generally be aware of this and not use it to their advantage.
  • Volatile: Someone who may or may not be aware of what they are, but cannot always control their temper or feedings or even their physical appearance. These are more common than those high functioning demons, as most people will know what is wrong and will not want to be a bad person. However, demons in this level can also use their powers to their advantage and can be very dangerous. They will have less control over themselves because they have let the demon come forward (whether they know it or not). Again, this is the most common level at which demons function.
  • Non-Functioning: A non-functioning demon is no longer human, or its humanity has been greatly reduced. Non-functioning demons, again, may not have known what they were and ended up, because of human folly, slipping into inhumanity. Some may know and want to take full advantage of it, want to banish their human side, find it disgusting. Your most non-functioning demon will have no conscience, will feed to kill and kill to feed, will not care that this is how they exist, and will never hide their physical appearance, simply because they don't see the point. It would not cross their mind. These are the most rare and the most dangerous. You cannot redeem them.
