Backstory
In November of 1971, a young woman gave birth to a baby girl in a hospital in the tiny English town of Blackburn, and died. The baby was adopted by Imtithal and Qasim al-Rashid, an Egyptian couple who had moved to Blackburn two years previously, and they named her Aludrah.
As a child, Aludrah was fairly outgoing, fielding the questions about why a pale, blonde girl had such an obviously Arabic name with a smile and explaining that not everyone shares biological links with the people they call their parents, thank you. She always had very good eyesight, almost uncannily so, and good reflexes to match, although nothing like one of the other children in Blackburn. Combined with this excellent eyesight and good reflexes was an almost inhuman patience, a willingness to stay still for hours and wait, if need be. Even as a child, she was perfectly willing to be still and watch and wait.
It made the teachers love her.
On January 3rd, 1983, Imtithal and Qasim were in a car accident on their way back from a business trip to London. Aludrah, only nine years old at the time, was fostered by several different families in Blackburn and surrounding environs, generally shunted from home to home. Teenage girls are difficult to deal with, and despite her quietness and ability – and, indeed, predilection – for sitting still, Aludrah was no different. She went through seven different foster homes in five years, although this upheaval in her family life didn't affect her school work terribly much. She was always intelligent, although not overly so, and worked hard.
She did not, particularly, like the sessions that she had with Dr. Reinhart, the town's local psychologist, but she was always very obedient and she went along to them like she was supposed to. She didn't actually believe that hypnosis worked, but it made her foster families feel better, and sometimes it was good to be able to talk about the deaths of her adoptive parents. By the time she was fourteen, though, she began actively hating Reinhart, although she was never entirely sure why.
In high school, Aludrah was made captain of the school's archery team. It came naturally to her, more so than anything else ever had. It wasn't difficult for her to become one of the best archers that Blackburn had seen for years – her hand-eye coordination was excellent, and she had a knack for finding just the right point to let loose the arrows.
When she was sixteen, one of Aludrah's friends shot her brains out.
Aludrah didn't stay for Melissa's funeral. She stole her foster-father's gun and hitched a ride out of Blackburn, meeting up with someone whose name she'd seen in Dr. Reinhart's address book during one of her sessions with him. Someone she'd heard him talking to about her, after a session. He had said she'd been improving with her archery, and she wanted to know why this woman wanted an archer.
Dana Eckert turned out to be a sniper, and when Aludrah sat down and pointed her gun at her and explained that she was not going to go back to Reinhart, and then demonstrated her skill with said gun, Dana was willing enough to take on an apprentice.
Every sniper has another occupation, of course, so Aludrah trained to become a professional instrument tuner, and that keeps her busy between commissions. She didn't feel all that much remorse about shooting people, since she was of the opinion that she was doing what she had to do. And it was better than what Reinhart would have planned for her.
When she was twenty, Aludrah stopped calling herself Aludrah bint Imtithal bint Jinan al-Rashid. That name was too distinctive, and she was sure that Reinhart was still looking for her. By then she'd earned enough to buy herself a fake identity, one that would stand up under all but the most stringent of inspections. As far as anyone else was concerned from that point, she was Allie Rashid.
At twenty-two, Aludrah met Nicholas Montgomery, a constable in the London Metropolitan Police. She'd always sworn never to fall in love, but love doesn't tend to listen to such oaths, and despite herself, she developed feelings for the handsome young policeman. They were married in 1996 in a Muslim ceremony, as even as Allie, she was a practicing Muslim, and in September of 1997, Aludrah discovered she was pregnant.
In March of 1998, Nicholas was shot in the head by an old 'friend' of Aludrah's, Bobby Sutcliffe, in the living room of their London home. Aludrah was shot in the thigh, and it was only thanks to some quick work on the part of the doctors that she didn't miscarry. The blood loss affected her badly, though, and she was hospitalised until the premature birth of her daughter on April 24th, 1998.
Aludrah, fearing that another incident would rob the baby of its mother the same way she'd lost her foster-parents, gave the baby up for adoption.
In 1999, she met Zeke Yancy, a professor of psychiatry at Cambridge University, while in Colorado Springs on a contract. 'Met', in this case, meant 'saved from a group of muggers', although Zeke wasn't in terribly great need of saving. Their mutual ability to get out of sticky situations was enough to have Zeke asking her to dinner, and attraction built when they discovered that their temperaments complemented each other almost perfectly, and that they lived near each other in Cambridge. Within a week of Aludrah's return to Cambridge, they had begun sleeping together.
What began as a means of forgetting about Nicholas and her daughter turned into an intense relationship, if not intensely physical, as neither of them were the overly sexual type. In 2001, they both decided that they made better friends than lovers, and the relationship ended on good terms. She remained good friends with Zeke, and he stayed the person who knew the most about her, although even he didn't know that she was an assassin. Turnabout was fair play, after all; she didn't know that he was a vampire from 1893.
She was shot again, this time in the ribs, in July of 2003. This was nothing to do with her job, for once; she was in the wrong place at the wrong time and got caught in a hostage situation in a service station holdup.
In December of 2006, Aludrah went to get an old necklace and bracelet of her mother's valued at a certain antiques store, and ended up threatening Ezra Thacker at gunpoint.
Bit of a misunderstanding, there.
Things got sorted out there (well, sort of), and that night she ended up at the Eclipse Bar, entrapping one Cary Vaughn-Blair before having a crisis of conscience and admitting to him that hey, this crazy lady called Joanne Moses had hired her to kill him, Ryan Bertrand and Alexander Fierch. Vaughn... proceeded to offer her a job. It was very strange.
About a fortnight later, the 14th of December happened, notably the explosion at the mortuary. Vaughn called Aludrah and they waded into the mostly-ruined mortuary to rescue Aingeal Duncan and assorted other lab techs. They were too late for one, so Aludrah said the prayer for the dead over her, and they got Aingeal and Richard Crowley out.
On January 1st, 2007, Joanna Moses figured out that Aludrah wasn't going to fulfill the terms of the contract and shot her in the shoulder. Admittedly she'd been aiming to kill her, but she wasn't a good shot at all, and Aludrah was able to call Zeke for help. Zeke did a bit of home surgery picked up from his days in the various armies, and put Aludrah to bed.
Eight days later, she called Vaughn and told him about the new development, and has since been recovering at Zeke's apartment.
