Detailed Information

Physical Description

Alex looks like any surfer would. He has shaggy, sun-bleached dark blond hair, tan skin, and an alarmingly nice physique. He's about 6'1", so rather tall. He tends to wear a lot of nonsense on his wrists, such as hemp bracelets, watches, and things his kids make, and loves flip-flops, torn jeans, and slightly unbuttoned, white linen shirts.

He keeps his hair in a slight ponytail now and again (and it's a tiny ponytail), but also goes clean-cut when he has to be respectable.

He has a tattoo on his chest, but I don't know what it is yet.

Personal Information

Laid-back is the best description. He fits a stereotype that he rather enjoys. He doesn't sound like a surfer, however, as he grew up in Western Washington to two Washingtonian parents, and is very intelligent.

He loves anything and everything about the ocean. He's a very skilled surfer who turned pro, but he started his watersports with sailing and wakeboarding on Puget Sound and at lakes around Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and BC. He still sails and still wakeboards. Like his wife, he his a pilot's license and owns a seaplane.

He became a trained diver at college and regularly combines it with his love of documentaries, a career he shares with his wife, Eleanor. He teaches surfing to young kids as his main source of income, but also lectures about diving and still gets money for judging competitions and showing his face at events.

Backstory

Born in 1969, Alex had a great beachy lifestyle in the Pacific Northwest. His parents lived right off the water and his father was an avid fisherman. The two often went sailing around the San Juans.

In 1977, his father had the family uprooted and headed to Hawaii. They lived right on the water again and Alex transferred his love of sailing for surfing. He was very skilled and competed heavily through his teens. His mother kept him grounded, however, determined not to have some surf bum child on her hands.

He goofed off a lot through honors courses in high school, and attended Hawai'i Pacific University, where he met Eleanor Fitzwilliam in 1988. Eleanor was deathly shy and rather afraid of him, which he thought was endearing. He called her Ellie and is the only person who actually does.

Alex was Eleanor's first everything. He took his job as her boyfriend very seriously. He went to England with her to meet her parents and even agreed they could live part time in Cape Town.

After a five year relationship, they married in 1993. Five children later, they might actually be done having more.

Together with his wife, they film documentaries about ocean life for universities and the Discovery Channel, and anything else that wants their work. They are freelance. The children go to school in Hawaii and have a dual citizenship in the United States and South Africa.

Alex may live forever.
